Get Growing!
We are really pleased to welcome our new Horticultural Project Officer, Stuart Kitchen who started on February 1st. Landlife successfully bid to lead on a new community food growing and cooking skills programme in Knowsley, with funding from the Knowsley Health & Wellbeing Partnership. Called Get Growing!, NWC is a key partner to get more people actively growing vegetables and learning more about cooking with them for healthy eating. Stuart will be supporting Knowsley residents and community groups to get gardening with veg, by running hands on, creative events and arranging informal training to build confidence and skills. He will also be encouraging people to cook from scratch and discover more about good, local food. Get Growing runs until July 31st 2011 and Stuart Kitchen is based at NWC here in Court Hey Park. The Centre has secured £200,000 of funding from the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) towards its plan to build a new educational, conference and seed production complex. The scheme, designed by Manchester-based Ian Simpson Architects, faced a public consultation meeting on 20 November before a planning application can be submitted.

Richard Tracey, head of environmental quality, NWDA said: "The aspiration to produce a new educational and visitor facility that will engage young people in exploring mathematics and science through wildflowers is an admirable and exciting one which has a potentially strong resonance with the agency's environmental quality and skills agenda." more
