Winter Celebration at the National Wildflower Centre
Dec 7th 2008

Community wreath making, Quarry Green Dec 8th

We invited people to keep well and healthy over winter with a little
natural activity at two events - making wreaths from natural materials to
take home. Over 200 people came to our Great Outdoors marquee at the Winter Celebration event until we ran out of materials! This annual Celebration was very well attended - despite the biting cold - and the hot home made food, roast chestnuts and mulled fruit juices went down very well!

We followed this up with a community wreath making event with 30 families in the Quarry Green (Old Rough) area in Kirkby on Dec 8th, a partnership event with Knowsley Housing Trust Dream Team to support tenant volunteering events. Some of the families made wreaths to give to older residents in local sheltered housing.

Nature and Public Health Open Day Wednesday November 26th 2008 at the National Wildflower Centre

Great Outdoors ran an open day event for community health staff, community leaders, volunteers, tenants organisations and creative organisations for them to explore together how more nature, parks and greenspaces can work for better health and wellbeing in Knowsley.

Key topics were
- wildflowers for health promoting places
- Knowsley's health action in parks
- Community allotments & food growing
- Horticultural creativity and mental health

The very successful day was fully booked and included a delicious home
cooked lunch in our Cornflower Café, to highlight the importance of locally
grown food and good culinary skills. People responded well to speakers,
and mix of lively presentation, creative thinking, workshops and natural
sociability! Particular thanks to our speakers Fiona Mather from Knowsley
MBC, Phil Dewhurst from Offshoots permaculture project in Burnley - another
Target: Wellbeing project - and Elizabeth Hammond from Start in Salford arts project.

Green Fayre Event June 8th 2008.
Court Hey Park, Roby road, Knowsley.
Landlife were busy promoting Great Outdoors at the Green Fayre as part of an exciting new programme in Knowsley promoting better health and wellbeing. We had a lively marquee with creative 'green' activities for kids and a focus on 'Plants for Health' with information on the powerful qualities and benefits of our native weeds and wildflowers!

We were joined by Pedal Away, a new cycling project, with lots of bikes to try including some for people with disabilities. We were also promoting new Storytelling with Wildflowers Walks in partnership with Knowsley Primary Care Trust and Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council, Ranger Service. These will run through the summer and we are particularly keen to get children and families along to enjoy our beautiful wildflowers with fun storytelling along the way - two will take place in Court Hey Park. Knowsley CVS also came along to promote V - new volunteering opportunities for young people.

The Green Fayre was a great success and we all enjoyed the lovely family
atmosphere that filled the park, making it a great place to spend the day!
We want to do more outdoor activities to encourage better use of our parks and greenspaces. Great Outdoors will be busy throughout the summer,
celebrating all the beautiful wildflowers we have been sowing to make the
environment healthy too. Working with Pedal Away and Knowsley Council, we also hope to develop the National Wildflower Centre as a local cycling and walking 'hub'. For more information.
