A small, creeping perennial, with vivid purple or white flowers, that can be seen in woods and hedges from winter through to spring. The flowers and leaves emit a strong heady sweet perfume. The distilled oil from the flowers is still used today to make, toiletries scent and flavourings. It is the larval food plant of the Queen of Spain Fritillary butterfly.
