BugBlock Bug Hotel

Support pollinators and wildlife with BugBlocks, a modular bug hotel designed in partnership with Buglife. This innovative bug hotel is made from eco-friendly, biodegradable materials with a blend of cornstarch PLA and recycled wood fibres. This not only reduces environmental impact but also ensures durability and weather resistance while retaining a natural, wood-like finish.

Each block is tailored for different species like bees, ladybirds, and lacewings. Easy to assemble, and to clean, BugBlocks bug hotels provide safe, effective habitats for insects.

Placement Guidance

To get the best performance from your BugBlocks:

  • Fix them securely so they don’t move or wobble.

  • Install them on a south-facing wall or post, around 1–1.5m off the ground.

  • Position them where pollinators can easily reach flowers, bare soil, and water (a shallow dish is ideal).

Cleaning & Swapping Routine

  • Every two years, remove the used blocks in November/December and store them in a cool, dry outbuilding (a simple shoebox works well).

  • Replace with a fresh set of BugBlocks so the habitat remains active.

  • In spring, return the stored units outdoors to allow insects to hatch. By July, once they’ve emerged, clean the blocks with warm soapy water and pipe cleaners. Let them dry fully, ready to be swapped again in the next two-year cycle.
