Sowing Instructions

How to sow wildflower seeds

  • Remove all weeds and debris.
  • If the area has been overtaken by weeds, it is important to reduce the number of weeds in the soil.
  • It may be necessary to allow time for the first flush of weeds to germinate and then remove them before attempting to sow wildflowers.
  • Wildflowers prefer poor soil with low nutrients and if it is practical to do so you could remove any good quality topsoil.
  • Prepare the soil to a fine tilth.
  • Try not to disturb the soil any further as this may bring more weed seeds to the surface.
  • Most wildflower seeds are best sown February to April and late August to October, with the ideal time being autumn. Avoid hot summer months.
  • It is advisable to mix the wildflower seed with a carrier (dry sand) to assist with sowing. This will help in distributing the seed evenly over a large area.
  • Sow pure wildflower mixtures (100%) at a rate of 3g/m2
  • Sow wildflower with grass mixtures at 5 g/m2
  • It should not be necessary to rake the seed over as the light helps germination on many species.

A few weeks after sowing, the seeds will begin to germinate. If you are using a wildflower seed mixture the growth of the different flowers (and grasses if you have them in the mix) will vary, so if grasses start to emerge first there's no need to worry.

  • Annuals will flower the same year if sown during the spring or the previous autumn.
  • Perennial wildflower species will establish during the first year of sowing and flower during the second year.
FAQs

Are wildflower seeds annual or perennial?

Wildflower seeds can be annual, perennial or biennial. Annual wildflowers can provide colour during the first growing season, while perennial wildflowers normally establish in the first year and return to flower in subsequent years.

Dual Purpose contains all three types, with 9 annual species, 17 perennial species and 1 biennial species. Read our guide to the difference between annual and perennial wildflowers for more information.

When should I sow Dual Purpose Wildflower Seeds?

Dual Purpose Wildflower Seeds can generally be sown between February and April or from late August to October. Autumn is often an effective time because the soil usually retains more moisture, while spring sowing can allow the annual species to provide colour during the same growing season.

Avoid sowing during very hot or dry conditions. Prepare the ground carefully and read our helpful guide explaining when to sow wildflower seeds before starting.

What is in an annual and perennial wildflower seed mix?

Dual Purpose contains 27 wildflower species: 9 annuals, 17 perennials and 1 biennial. The annual species include cornflower, common poppy, corn marigold and corncockle, while the perennial species include ox-eye daisy, common knapweed, yarrow and cowslip.

It is a 100% wildflower seed mixture, meaning it contains wildflower seed without grass seed. For mixtures containing both wildflowers and grass, view our Wildflower & Grass Seed Mixes.

Will perennial wildflowers flower in the first year?

Perennial wildflowers usually concentrate on developing roots and foliage during their first growing season and generally begin flowering from the second year onwards. Flowering times can vary depending on when the seed is sown, the weather and the condition of the site.

The annual species in Dual Purpose can provide first-year colour while the perennial wildflowers establish. If you specifically want an annual-only display, consider Cornfield Annuals Wildflower Seeds.

How much Dual Purpose Wildflower Seed do I need?

The recommended sowing rate is approximately 3g per square metre. The available pack sizes provide the following approximate coverage:

  • 10g covers 3m²
  • 50g covers 15m²
  • 100g covers 30m²
  • 250g covers 75m²
  • 1kg covers 300m²

Measure your planting area in square metres and choose the pack offering the closest suitable coverage. For more advice, read our helpful guide to working out how much wildflower seed you need, or contact the Landlife Wildflowers team for help with larger or irregular areas.
