Why Wildflower Bulbs

Why Choose Wildflower Bulbs?

Wildflower bulbs are one of the easiest ways to add natural beauty, colour and biodiversity to your garden. From early spring displays of Snake’s Head Fritillary to summer blooms of Alliums, planting wildflower bulbs ensures a continuous show that also supports bees, butterflies and other pollinators. If you’ve ever wanted a garden that looks both stunning and wildlife-friendly, wildflower bulbs are a must.

In this guide, we’ll explain why wildflower bulbs are such a good choice, then show you exactly how to plant them for the best results.

  • Low-maintenance beauty – Once established, many wildflower bulbs need very little care. They return year after year, often spreading naturally.
  • Great for pollinators – Bulbs such as fritillaries, crocus and alliums provide vital early nectar for bees and butterflies when other flowers are scarce.
  • Natural look – Wildflower bulbs blend seamlessly into lawns, meadows, and woodland edges, creating a more natural and informal style compared to cultivated bedding plants.
  • Season-long interest – By choosing a mix of bulbs that flower in spring, summer and autumn, you can extend the flowering season and keep your garden lively for longer.
  • Eco-friendly choice – Wildflowers help restore balance in the garden, supporting biodiversity and requiring fewer chemical inputs.

Planting & Care

When to Plant Wildflower Bulbs

The best time to plant depends on the species, but most spring-flowering bulbs (like fritillaries, daffodils, crocus, tulips) should be planted in autumn, usually between September and November, before the ground hardens with frost.
Summer-flowering bulbs (such as alliums or lilies) are usually planted in spring, once the soil has warmed up.

How to Plant Wildflower Bulbs: Step-by-Step

  1. Choose the right spot
Most wildflower bulbs prefer well-drained soil and a sunny or partially shaded location. Woodland bulbs, like bluebells, enjoy dappled shade.
  2. Prepare the ground
Clear away weeds and loosen the soil. For naturalised meadows or lawns, you can lift small patches of turf, plant the bulbs beneath, then replace the turf.
  3. Plant at the right depth
A general rule is to plant bulbs at a depth about three times the bulb’s height. Place them pointed side up, root side down.
  4. Space them out
Scatter bulbs for a natural look rather than planting in rigid rows. Clusters of 5–10 bulbs look more natural than single bulbs on their own.
  5. Cover and water
Gently firm the soil back over the bulbs, water well, and let nature do the rest

Aftercare
Once planted, wildflower bulbs need very little attention. Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering – this feeds energy back into the bulb for the following year. Avoid mowing lawns too early if you’re planting bulbs in grass, as they need time to replenish before going dormant.
