Why Plug Plants

Why Wildflower Plug Plants

Wildflower plug plants are an excellent way to add impact and biodiversity to your garden. These young plants are grown in small cells and come with a fully developed root system, ready to establish quickly once planted.

Plug plants are a great choice for filling gaps, boosting diversity, or getting results a little faster. With the right care, plugs will flourish and naturalise, becoming a long-term feature of your garden or meadow.

  • Healthy root systems – Plugs may look small or even a little tired on top, but their strong, well-developed roots are what matter most. Healthy roots allow them to settle quickly and thrive.
  • Great for biodiversity – Planting a variety of plugs helps create a balanced habitat that attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
  • Easy to plant and establish – Their developed roots make them resilient and easy to handle, even in tricky soils.
  • A complement to seeds – Use plugs alongside seed mixes to fill gaps, create patterns, or introduce species that are harder to grow from seed.
  • Flexible planting – Perfect for borders, containers, or meadows of any size.

The Importance of Roots
When planting wildflower plugs, it’s important to remember that what’s below the soil matters most. Even if the top growth looks small, pale, or dormant, the plug’s root system holds the plant’s energy and potential. Strong, white roots are a sign of health and will fuel growth once the plant settles in its new home.
Because the roots are already developed, plugs have a head start, helping them establish quickly, withstand competition, and flourish in a range of conditions.

Why Wildflower Bulbs

Why Choose Wildflower Bulbs?

Wildflower bulbs are one of the easiest ways to add natural beauty, colour and biodiversity to your garden. From early spring displays of Snake’s Head Fritillary to summer blooms of Alliums, planting wildflower bulbs ensures a continuous show that also supports bees, butterflies and other pollinators. If you’ve ever wanted a garden that looks both stunning and wildlife-friendly, wildflower bulbs are a must.

In this guide, we’ll explain why wildflower bulbs are such a good choice, then show you exactly how to plant them for the best results.

  • Low-maintenance beauty – Once established, many wildflower bulbs need very little care. They return year after year, often spreading naturally.
  • Great for pollinators – Bulbs such as fritillaries, crocus and alliums provide vital early nectar for bees and butterflies when other flowers are scarce.
  • Natural look – Wildflower bulbs blend seamlessly into lawns, meadows, and woodland edges, creating a more natural and informal style compared to cultivated bedding plants.
  • Season-long interest – By choosing a mix of bulbs that flower in spring, summer and autumn, you can extend the flowering season and keep your garden lively for longer.
  • Eco-friendly choice – Wildflowers help restore balance in the garden, supporting biodiversity and requiring fewer chemical inputs.

Browse our range of wildflower bulbs and start creating a garden that blooms beautifully year after year.

Planting & Care

How to Plant Spring Bulbs: Step-by-Step

  1. Choose the right spot
Most spring bulbs prefer well-drained soil and a sunny or partially shaded location.
  2. Prepare the soil
Remove weeds and loosen the soil to create a welcoming environment for roots.
  3. Dig the planting hole
Make a hole deep and wide enough for your bulb. A good rule of thumb is to plant bulbs about 2 to 3 times their height.
  4. Check the bulb orientation
Most bulbs have a pointed end (the shoot) and a flat or slightly rounded base (the roots). The pointed end should face up, towards the surface. Some bulbs, like crocus, are oval with a slight taper – the narrower tip is the top. If in doubt, look for tiny root hairs at the base – that side goes down.
  5. Place the bulb and space correctly
Position each bulb in the hole and space bulbs about twice their width apart to give them room to grow.
  6. Cover and firm the soil
Cover the bulbs with soil and gently pat down to remove air pockets. This ensures good contact between roots and soil.
  7. Water after planting
Water thoroughly to help the soil settle around the bulbs and start root development.

Aftercare
Once planted, spring bulbs need very little attention. Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering to feed energy back into the bulb for the following year. Avoid mowing over bulbs too early if planted in lawns.
